First presented in 1790 by Lord Richard Howe, an officer in the British Royal Navy, the nautical alphabet, in the form of flags, was designed to facilitate communication between sailors worldwide. Since then, it has evolved considerably and finally took its official form in 1934. The nautical alphabet is available as a large-format poster from Orcaz Designs.
